Cumbres & Toltec
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lawrence, KS - August 22, 2003 - Starfire Engineering & Technologies, Inc. was recently awarded a multi-year contract by the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission to provide engineering and consulting services to facilitate the overhaul and renovation of at least three Mikado-class (2-8-2) narrow gauge steam locomotives. The three locomotives, two of which are currently out of service, will provide motive power for Cumbres & Toltec's tourist trains which operate between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado on 64 miles of the former Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. The tourist railroad provides a major economic benefit to the Northern New Mexico, Southern Colorado region, and they're eager to return the locomotives to service. The locomotives will need to be brought into compliance with current Federal regulations before being allowed back into service. Extensive work is required on the boilers, frame, running gear, tenders and appliances. The improvements to the locomotives will be designed and implemented in such a way that the historic appearance of the equipment will be retained. Funding for the renovation efforts are being provided by the United States Economic Development Administration, the State of New Mexico, and by the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Starfire will also provide technical and administrative services designed to improve the overall operations of the Railroad, including maintenance and renovation of equipment that would lead to improved operating efficiency and would reduce overall operating costs.
